A Commie Under Every Rock
There certainly are a lot of freedom hating types abroad and at home here in America. There are so many that we don’t have to invent the fallacy of the a member of Red Diaper Brigade hiding in every dark alley and under every single rock. But some of us do anyway.

Last week a story hit the wires about a mother trying to welcome her daughter home from Iraq by placing a small sign in the median near her house. She had her sign removed. And Conservatives around the Internet turned into ranting liberals in a matter of seconds. They felt certain that there was a conspiracy afoot to prevent recognition of our troops by some left wing nut job somewhere down in Cape Coral.

Now, to be fair, this happened only amongst a subsection of the conservative movement and I would hesitate to even say that it was a majority of conservatives that acted this way. But when you visit message boards and blogs as much as I did that day and saw liberal speak coming from the mouths of self-professed conservatives you tend to take notice.

The facts of the case, much to the chagrin of the conservatives ready to get out their pitchforks and lynch a liberal, painted a much less sinister picture. The fact was that the mother put up the sign in violation of a city ordinance that prohibited people from just posting signs and other monuments in the median of the roads. She could have gotten a variance on the ordinance, but she did not. So her sign was removed.

And these facts were clear almost immediately, however that did not stop conservatives from hurling accusations. On the mild side the act of removing the sign was called simply “disgusting” and “wrong”. On the more extreme side some called for finding the commie, pinko bastard that was in charge and calling for his or her head at such “dishonor” towards our troops.

It is sad to see conservatives adopting the same victim mentality that has overcome liberals. The mother screwed up and the law was enforced. And it is a law that most municipalities and states have for the sole purpose of preventing our highways from becoming cardboard jungles of signs advertising every little thing from yard sales of junk nobody wants to roadside memorials to advertising for every cause under the sun.

Would you want to see that on your highways? No? Calm down and take a breath. There is nothing to see here and there are REAL problems that need addressing. We cannot waste our time tilting at windmills.
